SAVING SINNERS FROM HELL

Jonathan Edward's passionate sermon,  Sinners at the Hands of an Angry God is one of the most famous of the hell-fire and brimstone sermons in American history.  It grew into today's evangelism.

THE HOLINESS MOVEMENT
This had roots in the revivals of John Weysley.  It was in US in 1840's and 50's.
A major phase began in Vineland, NJ in 1867 as the National Holiness Camp Meeting Association.  Focus was on salvation through personal encounter with Holy Spirit, leading to living a Christ-like life.
The movie, The Apostle accurately depicts Holiness groups in the south today.



 

THE PENTECOSTAL MOVEMENT
Grew out of Holiness Movement, with a focus on speaking in tongues. April 14, 1906, on Azusa St. in LA ws a major event of modern Pentecostlism.  Spiritual ecstasy and speaking in tongues.  [Pentecost was about the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues.]  This revival led by African American preacher, William J. Seymour.  It spread among groups of immigants, poor, ethnic groups.  Fastest growing denomination today.

is the pentecostal movement within mainline denominations.
